Until his first novel, The Virgin Suicides, was published in 1993, Eugenides worked at various jobs such as taking photos and writing for Yachtsman magazine, bussing tables in restaurants, and working as a newsletter editor at the American Academy of Poets in New York City. He continued his education at Stanford University where he received his master's degree in creative writing in 1986. After high school, he attended Brown University, from which he graduated magna cum laude in 1983. His Greek parents' assimilation serves as part of the backdrop for Middlesex (2002).Įugenides attended and graduated from the prestigious University Liggett School, in Grosse Pointe.
