It’s very jarring, especially on the heels of some silly, misplaced criticisms directed toward Ligotti, and which also appear to be written in earnest. Unfortunately, the story contains a poorly veiled attack on British writer Mark Samuels, which comes out of nowhere. This isn’t particularly my thing, but it’s cute if you’re in the know, albeit incredibly distracting. Most of the characters are barely-disguised versions of their real life counterparts: Michael C. However, as those who have read the book are aware, the final story, “More Dark,” is sort of a meta, tongue-in-cheek tour of today’s inner circle of horror writers. I’m just now getting around to Laird Barron’s third collection - it’s been on my mental TBR pile forever - and it’s pretty good.
